Dog paw and claw care

A dog's paws and claws need regular checking and care — they are strained by movement on hard surfaces, by salt and hot asphalt. Here you will find aids for dog paw and claw care: claw clippers and files, balms and waxes for the pads, cleaning products and protective boots. Choose according to the dog's size and the environment in which it moves.

Dog paw and claw care

The paws are in daily contact with the surface the dog moves on, and the claws grow back naturally — so they need regular maintenance. Proper dog paw and claw care includes trimming the claws, tending the pads and protecting them from salt, snow or hot pavement.

For trimming the claws, claw clippers and scissors and files are used, including electric grinders that smooth the edge of the claw. The pads are helped by balms and waxes, which form a protective film and keep them supple. For cleaning after the walk, a paw washer, wipes and washing products are handy.

For moving on demanding terrain or in unfavourable weather, protective boots and sprays protect the pads from road salt, gravel and heat. The range differs in size and purpose — a puppy's paws are cared for differently than those of an active dog that runs on asphalt or through a winter landscape.

When choosing, start from the dog's size, the length of the fur between the pads and the environment where it moves. Trim the claws carefully and in small parts to avoid the sensitive part with the blood vessel; if you are unsure or an injury occurs, turn to a veterinarian. For all products follow the instructions and keep them out of reach of children.
