Delonix decaryi Seeds 2 pcs Rare Small Madagascan Tree with White Flowers and Red Stamens for Collectors' Cultivation
You already have the maximum available quantity in your cart.
A set of two rare seeds of the tropical tree Delonix decaryi represents a remarkably rare offer for collectors of critically endangered plants and enthusiasts of Madagascan flora. The species has been on the list of critically endangered trees in recent decades due to deforestation and loss of natural habitat in Madagascar. White flowers with striking long pink-red stamens are among the most prominent features of this rare tree. Two quality seeds represent a long-term investment in a dendrological collection for the discerning grower.
Delonix decaryi is a small deciduous tree native to the dry forests of southern and southwestern Madagascar. It reaches a height of 5 to 10 metres in its native environment and forms a umbrella-shaped spreading crown similar to its more famous relative, the royal poinciana. The leaves are twice pinnate with small oval leaflets that fall off during the dry season. The flowers have white to cream petals measuring 8 to 12 centimetres in diameter with long silvery stamens ending in small anthers. The tree flowers during the dry season, when it is leafless, making the flowering particularly striking.
For sowing the two rare seeds, exceptionally careful handling is necessary due to their rarity. The seeds are scarified with a file and soaked for 24 hours in hot water at a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius. After swelling, they are sown to a depth of 1 centimetre in a sterile substrate composed of peat, perlite, and coarse sand. Germination occurs in 2 to 6 weeks at a temperature of 26 to 30 degrees Celsius with high humidity. The germination rate of quality fresh seeds reaches 40 to 60 percent. Young seedlings grow slowly and require sunny locations with warmth above 18 degrees Celsius.

- 2 pcs of Delonix decaryi seeds
Delonix decaryi is a rare component of specific dry forests in Madagascar, which are rapidly diminishing due to agricultural activities and logging. The species is among the key targets of conservation programmes and its seeds are valued within ex-situ conservation programmes. For cultivation in Europe, a heated greenhouse environment with a year-round temperature above 15 degrees Celsius and a dryer period in the winter months is necessary. The time to first flowering is 7 to 10 years from sowing for well-cultivated seedlings. From two grown seeds, it is realistic to raise 1 healthy seedling, which can enrich a valuable tropical collection in the future.
