Overview
Dalbergia Sissoo Seeds 50 pcs Indian Shisham Tree with Spreading Green Crown for Tropical Cultivation and Ornamental Avenues

A larger pack of fifty seeds of the tropical timber species Dalbergia sissoo is an offer for exotic tree growers, those interested in agroforestry experiments, and collectors of valuable timbers from the Indian subcontinent. This species is the most important representative of the genus Dalbergia in India and Pakistan and serves as a fundamental raw material for the local timber industry. In Indian tradition, the tree is known as shisham and has been used for thousands of years in folk crafts and Ayurvedic medicine. Fifty quality seeds allow for the cultivation of enough seedlings for small production planting in a conservatory or greenhouse.

Shisham is among the fastest-growing tropical timbers with an annual growth rate of 1 to 2 metres under ideal conditions. In maturity, it forms a spreading globular crown with a diameter of 8 to 15 metres and an elegantly spread branching structure. The leaves are oval with a short tip, arranged alternately on the shoots, creating a dense green cover. The tree flowers in March and April with small yellow-white flowers in tiny clusters. In the Indian landscape, it is planted along canals, field paths, and village roads for shading.

For sowing fifty seeds, 24-hour soaking in lukewarm water with the addition of a few drops of liquid fertiliser to stimulate germination is recommended. The seeds are sown into peat-based substrate at a depth of 1 to 2 centimetres in long planting strips at a temperature of 24 to 30 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs relatively quickly within 2 to 5 weeks, and the germination rate for quality fresh seeds reaches 65 to 85 percent. From fifty seeds, it is realistic to cultivate 30 to 45 healthy seedlings suitable for further growth in a tropical environment.

Shisham has the status of a national tree of economic significance in India, and its wood is exported worldwide for the production of high-quality furniture. In traditional Ayurveda, preparations are made from the bark, leaves, and oil to support digestion and skin healing. The tree is exceptionally tolerant of poorer soils due to its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen in root nodules. For successful cultivation in Europe, container cultivation with year-round warmth above 12 degrees Celsius and wintering in a heated greenhouse is necessary. Mature specimens tolerate short-term drops in temperature, but prolonged frost will kill them.
