Overview
Dalbergia Latifolia Seeds 20 pcs Indian Rosewood with Dark Leaves for Greenhouse Cultivation and Collectors' Collections

A set of twenty Dalbergia Latifolia seeds is an offering for collectors of tropical hardwoods and lovers of Asian botany who wish to try cultivating this rare timber from sunny India. Dalbergia Latifolia is globally known as Indian rosewood and its wood is among the most valuable tropical hardwoods used in furniture making, musical instrument production, and artistic carving. The species has been protected by CITES in recent years due to excessive logging in its native habitat. From twenty quality seeds, seedlings can be raised for an attempt at long-term garden planting.

Indian rosewood is a robust deciduous tree reaching heights of 20 to 40 metres in its native environment with a trunk diameter of 1.5 to 2 metres. The leaves are compound, pinnate with 5 to 7 pairs of elongated oval leaflets and a glossy dark green colour. The tree flowers in April and May with small white to cream flowers in tiny clusters. After pollination, elongated pods containing 1 to 4 seeds inside are formed. The wood has a characteristic dark brown to purple-black colour with a beautiful growth ring pattern.

For sowing the twenty seeds, it is necessary to pre-soak in hot water at 80 degrees Celsius for 24 hours to break the hard seed coat. The seeds are sown to a depth of 1 to 2 centimetres in a well-draining peat substrate at a temperature of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs within 2 to 6 weeks and the germination rate of quality fresh seeds reaches 50 to 75 percent. Seedlings grow rapidly in the first years and require constant warmth above 18 degrees Celsius with regular watering. In Europe, it is only cultivated in a tropical greenhouse.

  • 20 pcs of Dalbergia Latifolia seeds

Cultivating Indian rosewood from seeds is a long-term project for collectors with the background of a heated greenhouse or tropical terrarium. The species reaches maturity after 25 to 30 years, but even young saplings are attractive ornamental plants due to their compact structure and glossy leaves. In India, the wood is traditionally used for making musical instruments, carving elements, and luxury furniture, which can cost tens of thousands of crowns per piece on the global market. For successful long-term cultivation, we recommend quality well-draining soil, partial shade, and year-round temperatures above 15 °C with protection from cold drafts.
