Overview
Dais Cotinifolia Seeds 5 pcs African Pompon Tree with Striking Pink Flowers for Cultivation in Greenhouses and Conservatories

A pack of five seeds of the rare African tree Dais cotinifolia presents an offer for collectors of exotic tree species and lovers of South African flora. This small tree originates from the open slopes and forest edges of the Republic of South Africa, where it grows as a smaller decorative shrub. The species is highly valued for its striking pink flowers arranged in globular clusters resembling small pompons, which is how it earned the English name pompon tree. Five quality seeds allow enthusiasts to try cultivating this rare flowering tree in the conditions of a European conservatory or greenhouse.

The pompon tree is a small evergreen shrub reaching heights of 4 to 6 metres in its natural habitat and usually 2 to 3 metres in container culture. The leaves are dark green, leathery, and oval measuring 5 to 9 centimetres in length with a slightly frosted surface. The flowers are pink ranging from light pastel to deep fuchsia and grow in round inflorescences measuring 4 to 7 centimetres in diameter. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer (May to July) and the flowering tree emits a sweet honey-scented fragrance. In South Africa, the bark was traditionally used to produce strong bast for making ropes.

For sowing five seeds, gentle warm stratification with a 24-hour soak in lukewarm water is recommended. The seeds should be sown shallowly to a depth of 5 millimetres in a permeable substrate composed of peat, perlite, and coarse sand. The germination environment should maintain a temperature of 22 to 26 degrees Celsius and moderate humidity. Germination occurs within 3 to 8 weeks and the germination rate of fresh quality seeds reaches 40 to 60 percent. Young seedlings grow slowly and require a sunny position with consistent watering during the first two years of cultivation.

The pompon tree is a popular ornamental shrub in South African gardens due to its compact habit, striking pink flowering, and relative ease of care. The species is suitable for planting as a solitary specimen in a container or in a smaller group in a conservatory. The time to first flowering is 3 to 5 years from sowing with good care. For successful cultivation in Europe, it is necessary to provide protection from frost during the winter months by moving the plant indoors to a temperature above 5 degrees Celsius. From five seeds grown, it is realistic to raise 2 to 3 healthy seedlings.
