Overview
Dais Cotinifolia Seeds 20 pcs South African Tree with Pink Round Flowers for Growing in Greenhouses and Tropical Gardens

Medium-sized pack of twenty seeds of the African pompom tree is suitable for growers planning extensive planting of this rare flowering tree in their tropical plant collection. Dais cotinifolia is among the unusual subtropical trees with aesthetic value comparable to Japanese ornamental cherries. Twenty seeds allow for the cultivation of enough young plants to create an attractive group planting in a winter garden or greenhouse. The species is a popular gift tree in the African environment symbolising love and prosperity.

This African tree is among the fast-growing species – under good conditions, it adds 40 to 60 centimetres per year during its early years. It reaches a maximum height of 4 to 6 metres in approximately 8 to 10 years from sowing. The root system is moderately deep with a branched structure for good anchorage in stony soils. The species tolerates dry periods well due to its origin in the South African savannah, but for maximum flowering, it requires regular watering. The lifespan of the tree under good conditions is 20 to 30 years, sometimes even longer.

When sowing twenty seeds, it is recommended to divide the dose into two parts – sow half at the beginning of March and the other half three weeks later to ensure gradual development of the seedlings. The seeds should first be soaked in warm water for 24 hours and sown into moist peat substrate in individual seed trays. Germination occurs in 3 to 8 weeks in a warm environment with a temperature of 22 to 26 degrees Celsius. Germination rates reach 40 to 60 percent with quality fresh seeds. Young seedlings are transplanted into larger containers after developing 4 to 6 true leaves.

For successful flowering, the plant requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily and a dry period during winter dormancy. From twenty seeds, it is realistic to cultivate 7 to 12 healthy seedlings for a full planting. The species is a popular choice for the photographic aspect of the garden due to the striking colour of its flowers and the contrasting dark green leaves.
