Overview
Dais Cotinifolia Seeds 10 pcs African Pompon Tree with Pink Inflorescences for Conservatories and Collectors of Exotic Trees

The set of ten seeds of the African pompon tree is a popular choice for growers of tropical and subtropical trees looking to expand their collection with a strikingly flowering species from sunny Africa. Dais cotinifolia is among the trees with high aesthetic value and low maintenance requirements after initial establishment. The species stands out with flowers in dense globular clusters of vibrant pink to soft lilac blooms, which is how it earned its English name in horticultural practice. From ten quality seeds, it is realistic to cultivate 3 to 5 healthy seedlings for further growing.

The pompon tree is excellently suited for shaping and is occasionally grown abroad as an informal bonsai or a low flowering tree in a container. The trunk thickens slowly and in maturity reaches a diameter of 8 to 15 centimetres with smooth grey-brown bark. The leaves are opposite, oval with a slight tip and create a dense foliage in the crown. Flowers appear in dense semi-spherical to spherical inflorescences with a diameter of 4 to 8 centimetres and bloom gradually over 4 to 6 weeks during late spring. After flowering, small dry fruits with seeds mature.

For sowing ten seeds, the most suitable combined approach involves pre-sowing treatment of the seeds with 24-hour soaking in lukewarm water followed by sowing into sterile substrate. The seeds are placed at a depth of 5 millimetres in seed trays with a minimum volume of 0.5 litres. Germination temperature should range between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius with moderate substrate moisture. Germination occurs within 3 to 8 weeks and the germination rate for fresh quality seeds reaches 40 to 60 percent. Seedlings after germination require partial shade and consistent watering during the first year of growth.

The pompon tree is particularly suitable as a seasonal specimen in a container, which can be moved indoors during the winter months. Full sun and well-drained soil are key to achieving abundant flowering and a compact habit of the plant. When grown in containers, annual repotting into a larger pot with fresh substrate is recommended during the first five years. In South Africa, young stems were used in traditional crafts for making small baskets and woven items. The species is not commonly available in Europe, making it a rare novelty in collector's collections.
