Overview
Crotalaria Juncea Seeds 20 pcs Tropical Legume with Yellow Flowers for Green Manuring of Soil and Intercropping in the Garden

A medium-sized package of twenty Crotalaria juncea seeds, also known as Indian Hemp, opens doors for permaculture, agroforestry, and organic farming enthusiasts to a proven fast-growing legume. This leguminous plant is cultivated in tropical regions worldwide as a highly effective green manure capable of enriching the soil with nitrogen and restoring its structure in a short time. In Asia, it is also processed into high-quality fibre for the production of ropes, nets, and paper, making it a significant industrial crop alongside hemp. The beautiful vivid yellow butterfly-like flowers arranged in upright clusters are visible in the photograph during peak blooming.

Indian Hemp forms a tall upright shrub with a woody lower stem reaching a height of 120 to 300 centimetres in a single growing season. The leaves are lanceolate, small, grey-green with fine hairs, creating sparse foliage that allows light to penetrate to the crops grown below. The yellow flowers sit in terminal racemes, usually blooming 60 to 90 days after sowing and attracting numerous pollinators. The fruits are explosive pods, from which the plant derives both its Czech and Latin names (crotalon means "rattle" in Greek).

For successful sowing, it is necessary to mechanically scarify the seed coat by briefly rubbing with sandpaper or soaking in hot water (80 °C) for fifteen minutes. After this treatment, the seeds should be sown to a depth of 2 to 4 centimetres directly into outdoor soil in late spring, when night temperatures consistently exceed 15 degrees Celsius. The substrate should be well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral with a pH of around 5.5 to 7.5, and the plant tolerates poorer soils well. Germination occurs quickly, within 5 to 10 days at temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, with germination rates typically reaching 70 to 90 percent.

Contents of the package:

  • 20 pcs of Crotalaria juncea seeds

From twenty cultivated plants, an area of around two to four square metres can be sown, which will create a substantial above-ground biomass capable of significantly improving the structure and fertility of the soil after incorporation. Indian Hemp is popular in tropical organic farming and has gained popularity in European permaculture in recent years as an effective summer green cover. The plants are also valuable for supporting pollinators, as they bloom in late summer when nectar from other sources is scarce. For maximum nitrogen fixation effect, the plants should be incorporated into the soil at the beginning of flowering, when the nitrogen content in the biomass is highest.
