Overview
Cordia dichotoma Seeds 5 pcs Tropical Fruit Tree from Asia with Small Yellow Fruits for Growing in a Greenhouse or Conservatory

Cordia dichotoma is an unusual tropical tree originating from Southern and Southeast Asia, where it is traditionally cultivated for both edible fruits and use in folk medicine. This package contains 5 seeds for your own experimental cultivation of this rarely available tree in a greenhouse, conservatory, or indoors. The species is known in India by the local names lasoda or gunda, and its fruits are a popular ingredient for making spicy North Indian chutneys and pickled vegetables.

The tree reaches a height of 8 to 15 metres at maturity, with a branched, arching crown. The leaves are alternately arranged, oval to elliptical, with a smooth surface and entire margins, as seen in the picture. Flowers appear in the leaf axils as clusters of small white blooms. After pollination, round fruits approximately 1 to 2 cm in diameter gradually develop, ripening from green to yellow, and then to pink or nearly black. Inside the fruit is a sweet to sticky pulp surrounding a single seed.

For successful germination, it is advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 to 48 hours. After soaking, they should be sown in well-draining substrate at a temperature of around 28 °C. Germination can be irregular, typically taking 3 to 8 weeks. Young seedlings require consistent warmth, higher humidity, and careful watering. Cordia dichotoma is a warmth-loving tree that thrives only in heated indoor conditions or greenhouses in Central European climates.

Growing your own Cordia dichotoma tree presents an interesting challenge for collectors of exotic fruit trees and enthusiasts of Asian cuisine. The fruits have a wide range of uses in Indian tradition – they are prepared into spicy lasoda chutney, pickled preserves, or eaten fresh as an exotic delicacy. In Indian and Sri Lankan folk medicine, the plant is used for the traditional preparation of ointments to support recovery. For successful long-term growth, a stable warm environment of around 22 to 28 °C, higher humidity, and a sunny location without direct midday sun are essential. In winter, it is advisable to grow the plant in a cooler room with temperatures around 15 to 18 °C and to limit watering.
