Overview
Seeds of the Beautiful Ceiba speciosa 10 pcs tropical tree with a bottle-shaped trunk and green crown for growing in the garden or in a pot

Ceiba speciosa, the beautiful ceiba, is an attractive South American tree known for its unusual silhouette. Among woody plants, it is characterised by its unmistakable bottle-shaped swollen trunk, in which the plant stores water for dry periods. This package offers 10 seeds for growing this remarkable tropical plant at home, on the terrace, or in a greenhouse. In nature, it reaches a height of 10 to 25 metres and creates a wide, spreading crown full of bright green palmate leaves.

Before sowing, it is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours – the hard shell will soften, increasing the germination success. They are sown in well-draining sandy substrate at a temperature of 22 to 28 °C and usually germinate within one to three weeks. Young seedlings grow relatively quickly and begin to form the typical swollen trunk that is so characteristic of this plant within the first few years. Young trees are often covered with striking thorns on the trunk, which usually disappear as they mature.

In domestic conditions, the beautiful ceiba is often grown as a decorative potted tree or as an exotic bonsai. The plant requires a bright location, well-draining substrate with a mineral content, and a resting period in winter in a cooler, bright room at a temperature above 10 °C. The beautiful ceiba is known in adulthood for its large pink to lilac flowers with creamy yellow centres, which appear in its native areas at the end of summer. The fruits are pear-shaped capsules, in which silky fibres form around the seeds once they ripen.

Growing the beautiful ceiba from its own seeds is a popular route for enthusiasts of exotic plants and collectors of caudex trees with interesting trunk architecture. The young plant gradually develops its typical shape over several years, with the trunk slowly thickening during drier periods. It also serves as an impressive specimen on the terrace during the summer months, when it can be moved outside to a sunny spot with protection from prolonged rain. For successful growth and the formation of the typical trunk, it is important to alternate between watering periods and drier cycles. Sunlight, warmth, and well-draining substrate with minimal peat content are the foundations for a healthy and attractive ceiba.
