Waffle makers

Waffle makers bake Belgian waffles, thin heart-shaped waffles and bubble waffles in a few minutes. You will find classic fold-over models, rotating waffle makers for even baking, and appliances with removable plates that go in the dishwasher. Choose according to plate depth, how many waffles come out at once, and whether you want temperature control.

Waffles live or die by how the batter bakes through: shallow plates give a thin, crisp waffle, deep ones a fluffy Belgian with big pockets. So pick a waffle maker by the waffles you want to eat — that shows in the plate type far more than in the wattage.

By plate shape there are Belgian makers with deep pockets, classic thin ones, heart-shaped models that break into portions, and bubble makers for Hong Kong waffles. Appliances for cones and waffle bowls form a group of their own. Rotating waffle makers flip through 180 degrees, so the batter spreads across the whole plate and the waffle bakes evenly — which is why you know them from hotel breakfasts.

The practical side comes down to removable plates: they go in the dishwasher and, on some models, swap for grill or sandwich plates, turning the waffle maker into a multi-purpose appliance. Fixed plates are harder to clean, though they tend to be cheaper. Also watch the non-stick coating, the ready light, and temperature control, which decides whether the waffle comes out well browned or stays pale.

Bear in mind that the plates and the housing are hot in use and that the appliance does not belong in children's hands. It is not immersed in water and is cleaned only once cool; the non-stick coating cannot take metal tools, so lift the waffle out with a wooden or silicone spatula. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
