An out-of-tune guitar can spoil even a well-played song. Clip-on tuners attach to the headstock and pick up vibrations, so they work even in noisy surroundings, while pedal tuners sit on the pedalboard and mute the signal while you tune. Chromatic mode also handles alternate tunings and other string instruments such as ukulele or violin.
Regular practice with a metronome improves timing faster than anything else. Classic mechanical metronomes with a pendulum have a pleasant, natural sound, while digital ones offer different time signatures, accents and a headphone output, and many also include a built-in tuner.
A capo shortens the vibrating length of the strings and raises the key without learning new chord shapes, making it easy to match a song to the singer's range. Spring-loaded models go on with one hand, screw-type models let you fine-tune the pressure, and for a classical guitar with a flat fingerboard it is best to choose a capo designed for it.
