Protective bags for plants

Protective bags for plants are used for the targeted protection of the harvest and individual fruit or smaller plants without chemicals. They act as a physical barrier that keeps insects, birds and other pests away from the fruit or the plant, while at the same time letting light, air and water through.

Fruit bags are smaller pouches of organza or fine mesh with a drawstring, slipped directly over the ripening fruit, cluster or bunch. They protect fruit and vegetables from wasps, aphids, the codling moth, birds and other pests and suit apple and pear trees, vines, figs, tomatoes or small berries. Larger bags can also be slipped over a whole small plant or part of it.

The material is usually a light and breathable organza, a fleece or a fine, UV-resistant mesh. The bags are reusable, easy to slip on and are fastened by drawing them tight around the stalk, branch or trunk.

When choosing, start from the size of the fruit or plant and from what you want to protect it against — against small insects choose a finer mesh, against birds larger mesh is enough. Put the bags on in time, before the pests fly in or the fruit ripens, and make sure they hold well even in wind.
