Overview
Seeds of Lebanese Cedar Cedrus libani var. libani 5 pcs evergreen coniferous tree with green needles for planting in the garden

Cedrus libani var. libani, Lebanese cedar, is an imposing evergreen coniferous tree from the mountains of the Middle East. This tree is the national symbol of Lebanon, representing strength and longevity, and can also be found in the country's coat of arms. This package offers 5 seeds for growing this iconic tree, suitable for larger gardens, parks, or as solitary specimens in expansive areas. In maturity, it grows to a height of 25 to 40 metres and forms a characteristic horizontally spreading crown with robust main branches.

For successful germination, the seeds should first be soaked in warm water for 24 hours and then undergo cold stratification in the refrigerator for 3 to 6 weeks. After this process, they are sown in well-draining substrate, where they germinate in approximately 3 to 6 weeks at a temperature of around 18 to 22 °C. Young seedlings should be protected from direct summer sun, and if they do not yet have sufficiently developed wood, it is advisable to provide them with a sheltered winter location in the first few years.

In maturity, the Lebanese cedar is very long-lived – in its native regions, individual specimens can reach ages of several hundred to a thousand years. The tree has deep roots, which allow it to withstand drier periods and calcareous skeletal soils. The tree bears short blue-green to dark green needles arranged in bundles on shortened twigs. Upright cones of barrel shape grow to a length of 8 to 12 cm and mature after two years.

Growing Lebanese cedar from seeds is a challenge for patient gardeners who wish to try creating a unique tree with a legendary history. The young tree can be grown in a larger pot on a sunny terrace for the first few years, but it will later need to be moved to open ground with enough space for root development and a sprawling crown. The tree enhances the atmosphere of classic historical gardens, is suitable for loosely designed park layouts, or for planting on large plots. The wood of the Lebanese cedar has historically been used in the construction of ancient temples, ships, and furniture, making it a timber with a rich cultural history. For successful cultivation from seeds, it is important to respect the cold stratification period, ensure substrate permeability, and provide the plant with ample light and space for full development.
