Insect nets and covers for plants

Insect nets form a fine barrier that keeps butterflies, aphids, flies and other pests away from plants — and all without chemicals. They are suitable for vegetable beds, brassicas, carrots, onions and small fruit. Here you will find nets with various mesh densities, widths and lengths. Choose according to the type of pest and the size of the area to protect. The range also includes ready-made covers and bags for individual plants.

Insect nets and covers for plants

Insect nets are fine fabrics that physically prevent pests from reaching the plants. Unlike bird nets, they have much smaller mesh and thus stop even tiny insects. At the same time they let through light, air and water, so the plants underneath can grow normally and can be watered directly through the net.

The mesh density is crucial; it is given in millimetres and determines what the net protects against. A looser net stops butterflies, for example cabbage whites on brassicas, a finer one also the carrot fly, aphids or flea beetles. The use is versatile — the net can be stretched over hoops or a frame above the bed, or laid directly on the crop as a floating cover. The material is a light and UV-stabilised polyethylene or polypropylene.

The range includes various widths and lengths, often on a roll from which you cut the required piece. The nets are light, breathable and reusable over several seasons.

Besides the nets themselves, the range also includes ready-made covers and bags for plants, which are slipped over an individual plant, shrub or seedling and protect it as a whole. They are useful where it is simpler to cover the whole plant than to stretch a net on a frame.

When choosing, start above all from the pest you want to protect the plants against — choose the mesh density accordingly. Consider the size of the area and the method of fastening. Put the net on in time, before the pests fly in, anchor it well to the ground and secure the edges so that insects cannot get underneath.
