Overview
Cryptomeria japonica Seeds 100 pcs Coniferous Tree with Green Feather-like Foliage for Garden Planting

Bulk pack of one hundred seeds of Cryptomeria japonica is designed for growers of dendrological collections, nurseries, and lovers of Asian conifers. Cryptomeria japonica is the national tree of Japan and holds a sacred status in Japanese culture within Shinto shrines, where the oldest individuals exceed two thousand years of age. The photograph shows a typical young specimen with finely feather-like light green foliage, which gradually darkens with age. One hundred quality seeds allow for meeting even the more demanding cultivation requirements and provide a reserve for the generally low germination rate of the species.

In maturity, Cryptomeria forms a massive conical tree reaching heights of 30 to 50 metres with a straight trunk up to 2 metres in diameter in the oldest specimens. The needles are small, awl-shaped, and spirally arranged around the shoots, creating dense feather-like branches, as seen in the photograph. The bark is reddish-brown to crimson and peels off in long fibrous strips in older individuals. The cones are spherical, small with a diameter of 1 to 2 centimetres, brown in colour, and contain small winged seeds with low germination rates. In Japan, the wood is traditionally used for construction beams, boat decks, sake barrels, and musical instruments.

Germination of Cryptomeria seeds requires combined stratification – first a warm phase lasting 4 weeks at room temperature with moist substrate, followed by a cold phase lasting 8 to 12 weeks in the refrigerator at 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. After stratification, the seeds are sown into well-draining seedling substrate with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 at a depth of approximately 5 millimetres. The substrate must remain consistently moist, not wet, and the first emergence occurs 3 to 6 weeks after being moved to a warm environment. Germination rates for this species typically range between 20 and 40 percent, so from one hundred seeds, one can expect 20 to 40 viable seedlings.

  • 100 pcs of Cryptomeria japonica seeds

Cryptomeria japonica is still a rarer tree species in Europe, successfully cultivated especially in climatically mild regions with higher humidity – ideal for English, Irish, and northern French gardens. In the Czech Republic, it can be found in arboreta, parks, and collections of tropical plants, where it serves as an exotic element with a strong aesthetic impact. From 100 cultivated seedlings, one can grow a small grove community of trees for future cultivation projects or for sale to specialised nurseries. The main prerequisites for successful cultivation are well-draining acidic soil, sufficient moisture during the summer, and protection from strong winds in the first five years of growth.
