Christmas home textiles

Cushions, tablecloths, rugs and towels with Christmas motifs suit the living room, kitchen, dining room and hallway. Christmas home textiles include cushion covers, checked tablecloths, table runners and placemats, hand towels, tea towels, oven gloves and aprons, chair covers, flannel rugs, rugs for under the tree, doormats and decorative stockings for hanging. After the holidays they can be packed away and used again the following year.

Cushion covers usually measure 45 × 45 cm and are printed with a snowman, dogs, festive lettering or a check pattern. There are soft and linen covers in red, green or white, which slip over an existing cushion on the sofa, armchair or bed. After the holidays the cover comes off and the cushion stays in use.

Checked tablecloths are woven from a polyester-cotton blend and have fringes. Sizes range from 60 × 60 cm for a coffee table to 140 × 300 cm for a large dining table, and they combine red with green, white or blue. There are also cotton tablecloths with pom-pom fringes and a wipe-clean PVC tablecloth. Table runners 33 cm wide and 150, 180 or 200 cm long go down the centre of the table, with placemats under each plate.

Kitchen textiles include 18.7 × 23.7 cm hand towels in thick fleece with a hanging loop, sold singly or in sets of 4, 40 × 48 cm decorative tea towels, oven gloves with a pot holder and aprons with a Christmas print. Chair covers slip over the backrest, are shaped like hats or feature a stag motif and come in sets of 2 or 4.

Flannel rugs measuring 40 × 40, 80 × 80 and 120 × 120 cm have a soft surface and a Christmas print, while larger rugs range from 50 × 80 to 140 × 200 cm. Round rugs 60 or 78 cm in diameter suit the area under the tree, hiding the stand and catching fallen needles. Non-slip doormats measuring 40 × 60 cm belong by the front door, and 15 × 25.7 cm decorative stockings hang on the mantelpiece or banister.

When choosing Christmas home textiles, it helps to match the colours of the tablecloth, cushion covers and rugs. The classic combination of red, green and white goes with most Christmas decorations. A washable tablecloth is worth having for the dining table, while a PVC one just needs wiping with a damp cloth.
