Bird nets

Bird nets are among the simplest ways to protect the harvest from birds without harming them. Birds especially like ripening cherries, small berries, grapes and strawberries, but can also peck at freshly sown areas. A net draped over the top forms a barrier that does not let them reach the harvest.

The nets differ in mesh size — it should be small enough that smaller birds cannot get through, yet at the same time do not become entangled in it. They are used over fruit trees and shrubs, stretched on a frame over beds or vines, or over ponds to protect fish from herons. The material is a light and UV-stabilised polyethylene or polypropylene that lasts outdoors for a whole season.

The range includes various widths and lengths, often on a roll from which the required piece can be cut. The colour is usually chosen so that the net is discreet and does not shade more than necessary.

When choosing, start from the size of the protected area and the type of plant. Tension and anchor the net well to the ground or the frame — a well-tensioned net holds better, birds get entangled in it less often and it is easier to work with. Secure the edges so that birds cannot slip underneath.
