Growing this unusual annual is one of the interesting gardening projects for any lover of plants with an unusual appearance. After sowing, the seeds develop well in warmed substrate, and the young seedlings gradually produce the first leaves, from which fully developed plants with characteristic grey-green spiny leaves emerge throughout the season. During the flowering period, the plant begins to produce unmistakable yellow flowers with a darker centre, which are the main ornamental value of the species and create an effective accent in garden plantings. The species appreciates sunny locations with well-drained soil and tolerates drier conditions well, making it suitable for dry gardens, slopes, or naturalistic compositions. When handling the plant, it is advisable to exercise caution due to the sharp spines on the leaves and stems, which can cause minor injuries. Regular watering during dry periods is not necessarily required, as the plant is adapted to drier conditions, but mild fertilisation during the growing season promotes richer flowering. The species can self-seed in some climates, allowing it to return in subsequent seasons and create a long-term element in the natural garden. For gardeners seeking a unique annual with interesting spiny foliage, spiny poppy represents an intriguing choice with high aesthetic value and versatile use in various types of garden compositions.
