Overview
Seeds of Australian Cordyline Cordyline australis Purpurea 10 pcs ornamental tree with purple leaves for the garden or summer terrace

Cordyline australis 'Purpurea', the purple variant of Australian cordyline, is a popular subtropical plant sought after for its distinctive sword-like leaves in deep purple burgundy shades. This package contains 10 seeds for growing this attractive tree at home, on the terrace, or in the garden. The species originates from New Zealand, where it can reach heights of up to 20 metres in the wild, forming a characteristic silhouette in landscape panoramas. The cultivated variant Purpurea has been bred for more intense purple to burgundy leaf colouring.

In its youth, the plant forms a compact tufted rosette of leaves emerging from a basal point, later developing a single or branched trunk. The leaves are 30 to 80 cm long, narrow, with a stiff upright posture and leathery texture. The characteristic purple burgundy colour remains prominent throughout the year due to the presence of anthocyanin pigments. In adulthood, the plant produces rich terminal inflorescences with small fragrant white flowers, which are followed by small berry-like fruits.

For germination, it is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing and to sow them shallowly in well-drained substrate at a temperature of 20 to 25 °C. Germination typically takes 3 to 6 weeks. Cordyline Purpurea is a half-hardy plant in European conditions – it can withstand temperatures around -5 to -8 °C, but young specimens should be protected in winter. In domestic gardens, it is primarily grown as a potted plant on sunny terraces, which we move to a cool, bright room in winter.

In the garden, cordyline is suitable as a standalone or as an accent in mixed plantings with lower perennials and ornamental grasses. On the terrace in a pot, it creates an eye-catching vertical element that evokes the atmosphere of southern landscapes with its exotic character. For successful long-term cultivation, it is important to provide a sunny location, well-drained substrate with good drainage, and regular watering during the summer. In winter, young plants should be placed in a frost-free room with a temperature of 5 to 10 °C and watering should be kept to a minimum.
