Overview
Replacement Achromatic Objective 40x with Silver Body for Biological Microscope with Aperture 0.65 and Conjugate Distance of 185 mm

The replacement achromatic objective with a magnification of 40x is one of the most commonly used objectives in biological microscopy, as it allows for the distinction of individual cells while still observing their arrangement in the specimen. The silver body is marked S40/0.65, indicating the magnification and numerical aperture 0.65. The second line 160/0.17 specifies the mechanical tube length and the thickness of the cover slip for which the optics are designed. The objective operates dry, without immersion oil, and the achromatic correction reduces colour fringes at the edges of observed structures. The conjugate distance of the objective is 185 mm, which is a parameter that must correspond to the optical system of the microscope into which the objective is mounted.

  • Magnification 40x – in conjunction with the microscope eyepiece, it allows for viewing the shape of cells, cell walls, and other details in both plant and animal specimens, while still keeping their surroundings visible in the field of view.
  • Numerical Aperture 0.65 – the specification marked on the casing just after the magnification, which places the objective among other objectives and allows for comparison with the existing equipment of the microscope.
  • Tube Length and Cover Slip – the marking 160/0.17 means that the objective is designed for microscopes with a tube length of 160 mm and for specimens covered with a slip of 0.17 mm thickness.
  • Without Immersion Oil – the objective does not have an OIL marking, so there is air between the lens and the cover slip, and there is no need to clean the lens from oil after observation.
  • Light Blue Stripe – the colour marking on the casing helps to quickly locate the objective in the revolving nosepiece, while the black knurled ring provides a firm grip when screwing it in.
  • Compact Shape with Thread – the objective screws into the free position of the revolving nosepiece or replaces a worn or damaged piece of the same magnification without needing to change other parts of the microscope.

Contents of the Package:

  • 1x Achromatic Objective 40x

The 40x objective is used very frequently in microscopy, making it worthwhile to keep it in good condition within the assembly. When the original objective is scratched, dirty, or missing, this piece with the same magnification can replace it, provided it matches the conjugate distance of 185 mm and the tube length of the microscope. As this is a dry objective, working with it is quick and suitable for novice users who are not yet working with immersion. When focusing, it is advisable to start from a lower magnification, first finding the desired spot and then switching to forty times magnification to fine-tune the sharpness with the fine adjustment screw. The objective finds application in school collections, during natural science lessons, and in home laboratories, where it is used to observe, for example, plant sections, smears, or drops of water from a pond.
