Latex mattresses

A springy, breathable latex mattress follows the shape of the body and spreads pressure evenly. Single-layer and multi-layer (sandwich) models come in a range of firmness levels, heights from 12 to 25 cm and sizes for single and double beds. The structure of the material makes it harder for dust mites and mould to settle, which allergy sufferers tend to value. There are also versions with a removable washable cover and models with a different firmness on each side.

Latex mattresses

High elasticity lets latex mattresses respond quickly to a change of position. The material is produced by foaming the milky sap of the rubber tree and then curing it, which gives it an open structure with thousands of tiny holes. These allow air to circulate and moisture to escape. Latex mattresses are therefore often recommended to people who sweat at night or overheat easily.

A distinction is drawn between natural latex, tapped from the sap of the rubber tree, and synthetic latex, produced chemically. The natural version is springier, longer-lasting and handles moisture better, but costs more and weighs more. Synthetic latex is cheaper and holds its shape more reliably. Blends of both materials are common and balance performance against price.

By construction, these mattresses divide into single-layer and multi-layer (sandwich) builds. A single-layer core uses the same material throughout its height and suits everyday sleeping. Multi-layer models combine latex with further layers, such as cold foam or memory foam, and offer a different firmness on each side. Height ranges from roughly 12 to 25 cm, with lower models serving more as a topper or for children's beds, and taller ones as the main mattress.

When choosing, firmness matters most, usually described as soft, medium or firm. Lighter people tend to pick a softer version, heavier people a firmer one. Sleeping position also plays a part: side sleepers suit a softer surface, back and front sleepers a firmer one. The cover deserves attention too, since a removable cover with a zip can be washed and noticeably extends the lifespan.

The structure of latex makes it harder for dust mites and mould to settle, which is why people with allergies often turn to these mattresses. Any specific claim is backed by a material certification such as Oeko-Tex. They need a rigid slatted base with enough slats and regular rotation so the material wears evenly.
