Overview
Larger Honeywort Seeds Cerinthe major 50 pcs Flowering Annual with Decorative Bracts for Summer Beds, Pots, and Cut Flowers

Larger honeywort (Cerinthe major) has found its way into modern gardens in recent years, appealing to growers interested in less traditional annuals. This slender herb from the borage family derives its name from the Latin term meaning "wax flower" – referring to the waxy structure of its tissues. This advantageous pack of 50 seeds is suitable for growers planning larger plantings, flower meadows for pollinators, or regular sowing throughout the season. From small black seeds, plants will grow to a height of 30 to 70 cm with characteristic blue-green foliage.

When sowing, it is advisable to divide it into several stages from mid-April to June, thereby extending the flowering period over a significantly longer interval. Seeds should be sown at a distance of 20 to 30 cm and covered with a thin layer of substrate. Germination occurs at around 17 °C within two to three weeks. Before sowing, it is beneficial to soak the seeds in lukewarm water overnight, which can increase germination rates by 10 to 20%. After germination, the seedlings require regular but moderate watering and the first fertilisation with a general-purpose fertiliser about a month after emergence.

During flowering, the plant acts as a magnet for bumblebees and bees, whose visits ensure good pollination and seed ripening for the next season. Honeywort can be combined with many types of border plantings – for a rustic style with poppies, cornflowers, and geraniums, for Mediterranean gardens with lavender and summer savoury, or with warmth-loving annuals such as cosmos, sunflowers, and salvias. Larger honeywort is also excellent for container plantings, where its drooping clusters of flowers and thick leaves complement more upright plants well.

Growers can utilise the larger pack of honeywort seeds for multi-year projects with gradual sowing and replanting. The plant is among the less traditional annuals suitable for permaculture gardens, flower meadows, supporting beneficial insects, or as underplanting beneath fruit trees. Once the fruits ripen, the plant self-seeds, and in subsequent years, it can regenerate entirely without gardener intervention. With regular trimming of spent blooms, it flowers well into autumn, and its abundant flowering offers refreshing colour contrasts between dark burgundy bracts and turquoise blue flowers. For the best results, a sunny location, moderately well-drained substrate, and occasional fertilisation in mid-season are all that is needed.
