Overview
Larger Honeywort Seeds Cerinthe major 10 pcs Unusual Honey Plant Annual with Blue Bell-Shaped Flowers for Garden and Container

The larger honeywort (Cerinthe major) attracts the attention of gardeners across Europe with its unconventional appearance reminiscent of a tropical plant, although it originates from the warm Mediterranean. This package contains 10 seeds for personal planting, which can be used to plant several planting groups or add this annual to mixed borders. The characteristic features of the species are fleshy grey-blue leaves with a fine whitish waxy coating, deep purple bracts at the inflorescence, and tubular drooping flowers in shades from navy blue to burgundy.

The honeywort is best grown by direct sowing into open soil. The optimal sowing time is from the end of April to the second half of May, or pre-cultivation can be done on a bright window in mid-March. Germination usually takes 10 to 20 days at a temperature of 15 to 18 °C. It thrives in sunny to semi-shaded positions with well-draining soil, tolerates slightly drier substrates, and typical Mediterranean conditions. After the first flowering, the plant usually produces self-seeding, so in subsequent years, spontaneous regeneration can be expected.

Larger honeywort reaches a height of 30 to 60 cm and forms a softly upright bushy habit. The flowering period is long, from early summer to autumn. The plant is a significant magnet for pollinators – especially for bees, bumblebees, and other long-tongued insect species that flock to its highly nectar-rich flowers in large numbers. The flowers also contain plenty of pollen, making the plant appreciated in organic gardening and permaculture projects. For cutting into bouquets, stems in full bloom along with leaves are suitable – they add an airy lightness with unusual colouration in arrangements.

Growing honeywort is suitable for gardeners looking for an unusual yet undemanding summer plant with great ecological value. Sown in groups, it enhances the character of rural, wilder, and modern gardens with an emphasis on supporting pollinators. Honeywort combines excellently with heat-loving annuals such as cosmos, sunflowers, or nasturtiums, complementing them with its cooler colour shade. When planting in boxes or containers, a standard universal substrate, well-draining base, and sunny location are sufficient. To fully utilise its beauty, it is advisable to let the plant grow freely and leave a few ripening seeds at the end of the season for spontaneous regeneration of the next generation.
