Cerinthe major, larger honeywort, is an attractive annual to short-lived herb originating from the Mediterranean regions of Southern Europe and North Africa. This package contains 5 seeds for planting this unusual annual, which enhances the garden atmosphere with an exotic touch. The plant grows to a height of 40 to 60 cm and forms compact clumps with thick, slightly succulent leaves of a blue-green colour, which are typically hugging around the stem at the base. At the ends of the stems, attractive drooping flower clusters bloom with blue-purple tubular flowers and equally coloured bracts that catch the eye at first glance.
The honeywort seeds are sown directly into their permanent location from mid-April to the end of May. The principle of shallow sowing is maintained – the seeds only need to be lightly covered with a layer of substrate 0.5 to 1 cm thick. Germination usually takes 2 to 3 weeks at a temperature of 15 to 20 °C. For an early flowering onset, seedlings can be pre-grown indoors on a windowsill at the end of March and planted outside after mid-May. After germination, the young plants are spaced approximately 25 to 30 cm apart.
Larger honeywort flowers from June to September, or even until the first autumn frosts, depending on temperature and moisture. The flowers have sweet nectar and are highly attractive to bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. After flowering, small round fruits – achenes – appear on the plant, which gradually fall off and self-seed. Therefore, the plant can persist in the garden in subsequent years if you leave a few ripening fruits. The bracts change colour throughout the season from blue to purple to violet, creating an interesting visual effect.

Growing honeywort is an interesting choice for gardeners seeking less common ornamental annuals with an exotic appearance. The plant tolerates a well-drained, moderately fertile substrate and can manage short periods without watering in drier areas. It is suitable to plant at the edge of a bed or in mixed plantings with other annuals, where its blue-purple colours will create a striking contrast with the warm shades of other flowers. Honeywort is also suitable for cutting into summer bouquets – in cooler water, it lasts about 5 to 7 days and adds an unusual touch to arrangements. To achieve the best bract colouring, the plant needs plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil without waterlogging.
