A larger pack of twenty seeds of the purple variety of Indian thorn apple allows the grower to raise enough seedlings to create a whole flowering corner in the garden. Datura metel 'Purple' is one of the most attractive summer annuals due to its fully developed purple trumpet-shaped flowers. The species is enjoying growing popularity in European horticulture among collectors of annuals and creators of exotic garden compositions. Care must be taken when handling the seeds and plants due to the high content of psychoactive alkaloids in all parts of the plant.
This purple variety of thorn apple features fully developed flowers with two to three layers of petals, making it appear even more dramatic than the classic white forms. The flowers range in shades from light purple to deep rich purple with striping on the inside of the tube. The plant blooms incredibly profusely and reaches a height of 100 to 140 centimetres with a similar width. The leaves are large, heart-shaped with wavy edges and provide an attractive backdrop for the striking blooms. The flowers open in the evening and emit a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators.
For sowing twenty seeds, staggered pre-cultivation in two terms during March and early April is recommended for extended flowering throughout the season. The seeds undergo a 24-hour soaking in warm water with a few drops of root stimulator. They are sown in well-draining substrate to a depth of 5 millimetres with a spacing of 3 centimetres in seed trays. Germination occurs in 2 to 4 weeks at a temperature of 22 to 28 degrees Celsius, with a germination rate of 70 to 90 percent. Young seedlings are grown indoors for 8 to 10 weeks before being transplanted into open soil in mid-May.
