Overview
Indian Thorn Apple Datura metel Purple 10 pcs ornamental annual with purple trumpet-shaped flowers for summer garden planting

A set of ten seeds of the purple variety of Indian Thorn Apple is an offer for growers who wish to enhance their garden with a dramatic annual featuring large, striking flowers. Datura metel originates from the tropical regions of India and China, where it has a long history in folk medicine and religious ceremonies. This variety blooms with large trumpet-shaped flowers in a rich purple to lilac colour with a double-flowered structure, making it exceptionally striking in the garden. Important notice – all parts of the plant are highly toxic and contain tropane alkaloids, so caution is required when handling.

Indian Thorn Apple forms a compact annual plant growing to a height of 80 to 120 centimetres with branched stems and dark green leaves. The leaves are large, oval with wavy edges measuring 10 to 15 centimetres in length. The flowers have a characteristic trumpet shape measuring 12 to 18 centimetres in length and bloom gradually from mid-summer to the first autumn frosts. The flowering plant emits a strong sweet fragrance especially in the evening when new flowers open. After flowering, spiny round capsules containing seeds form, which are also toxic.

For sowing ten seeds, pre-cultivation indoors from mid-March in seed trays with peat-based substrate is recommended. The seeds should be soaked for 24 hours in lukewarm water to swell the hard seed coat. They are sown to a depth of 5 millimetres and kept at a temperature of 22 to 26 degrees Celsius. Germination occurs in 2 to 4 weeks and the germination rate for quality fresh seeds reaches 70 to 85 percent. After mid-May, the seedlings are planted in a sunny location with a spacing of 60 to 80 centimetres, ensuring sufficient space for branching.

Indian Thorn Apple purple is an eye-catching ornamental annual suitable for creating a dramatic solitary planting in a container or at the back of a flower bed. The flowers attract night moths and hawk moths, which are key pollinators of the plant in its natural habitat. For safe cultivation at home, it is recommended to place the plant out of reach of children and pets due to the high toxicity of all its parts. When cutting and handling, it is advisable to wear gloves and wash hands after handling. From ten seeds grown, it is realistic to cultivate 6 to 8 strong plants capable of reliably flowering.
