Hawthorn Seeds Crataegus pinnatifida 5 pcs Asian Fruit Tree with Large Red Fruits for Growing from Seed
You already have the maximum available quantity in your cart.
A five-piece packet of Chinese hawthorn seeds offers the opportunity to grow an exotic fruit tree, whose fruits have been valued in Asia for over two thousand years. Crataegus pinnatifida significantly differs from European hawthorn species primarily in the size of its bright red fruits, which can reach up to three centimetres in diameter and form the basis of various traditional Chinese delicacies. This species has recently appeared as a rarity in the gardens of fruit tree collectors and permaculture growers focused on unusual species.
The tree grows to a height of around six to seven metres and develops a relatively sparse, spreading crown with less pronounced thorniness than European hawthorns. The species name pinnatifida refers to the specific shape of the leaves, which are deeply lobed and vaguely resemble maple leaves. In April and May, white flowers appear in dense clusters, followed by round or slightly pear-shaped fruits in September to October. The skin of the fruits is covered with characteristic small light lenticels, which give the surface a unique starry pattern.
For sowing, it is advisable to soak the seeds in warm water for twenty-four hours and then undergo a two-phase stratification consisting of approximately four months of warm phase and another four months of cold phase. Some seeds may germinate only in the second or third year, so each individual seed from the small packet carries significant weight. A suitable method is sowing in a well-draining substrate composed of garden soil, perlite, and river sand in a ratio of 2:1:1. Young seedlings grow more slowly in the first two years and require partial shade and consistent watering.

Contents of the Package:
- 5 pcs of Crataegus pinnatifida seeds
Five seeds represent an entry-level package for experimenters who want to try growing an Asian fruit tree in the conditions of a British garden for the first time. The fruits of the Chinese hawthorn are traditionally used in China to prepare tanghulu, or candied fruits on a skewer, and as an ingredient in dried snacks, fruit bars, or apple-hawthorn jam. In traditional Chinese medicine, the dried fruits known as Shan-Zha are used to support digestion of fatty foods and regulate excessive appetite. The tree requires a sunny location, protection from winter winds in the first years, and will later repay with a regular annual harvest. The grown seedling typically starts to bear fruit seven to nine years after sowing.
