Overview
Hawthorn Seeds Crataegus pinnatifida 20 pcs unusual fruit tree from Asia with large red fruits for small orchards

A medium-sized pack of twenty seeds of Chinese hawthorn Crataegus pinnatifida is designed for gardeners who plan broader production of seedlings – either for the establishment of a home orchard of rarities, or for producing their own rootstocks for grafting ornamental and fruit species from the rose family. Crataegus pinnatifida serves as a reliable generative rootstock for some pears, medlar or service trees, thus opening experimental possibilities for gardening creativity. In China, this species is cultivated on extensive plantations and in the provinces of Shandong and Liaoning, it is one of the typical autumn fruit crops.

The tree features a strong main root with a branched secondary network, enabling it to withstand drought better than most other representatives of the genus. The branching of young plants is more regular and upright than that of the European hawthorn, eventually growing into a rounded shape. The fruits are literally enormous compared to our native flora – they can weigh up to twelve grams and usually contain three to five hard stones within the compact pulp. The seasonal cycle of this species is shifted compared to European hawthorns, flowering a little earlier and the fruits ripening gradually from late September.

When processing a larger quantity of seeds, bulk stratification in a plastic bag with peat and coarse sand proves effective, which after twelve to sixteen weeks of warm stratification is moved to the refrigerator for a similar duration of cold stratification. For uniform germination, it is advisable to rinse the seeds with clean water every two weeks before stratification to remove any germination inhibitors. From twenty seeds, one can usually expect the emergence of five to twelve plants over two growing seasons. Seedlings are transplanted into separate containers after the first true leaves have formed and in the following year subsequently into open soil.

From twenty cultivated saplings, one can establish a small fruit plantation or enrich a mixed planting of an orchard with an exotic element that annually yields dozens of kilograms of aromatic fruits. The fruits are used in the gastronomic sphere for the production of apple cider, syrups, fruit pastes and wine, and in recent years, dried sliced forms served with white meat have gained popularity. Hawthorn pinnatifida is also valued as a suitable rootstock for more demanding grafting of ornamental hawthorns, and trees from these seeds provide a robust genetic basis for such breeding experiments. In terms of ornamental value, it captivates with a long period of attractiveness – from spring flowering through summer's rich green foliage to late autumn fruitfulness that adorns the garden.
