Overview
Hawthorn Seed Crataegus pinnatifida 10 pcs Chinese Fruit Tree with Edible Fruits and Pinnate Leaves for Unusual Planting

A set of ten seeds of the Chinese hawthorn Crataegus pinnatifida allows the collector gardener to grow several seedlings at once and in the future choose the healthiest specimen for main planting or use all specimens to create a small fruit corner. Crataegus pinnatifida originates from the temperate zone of northern Asia, where it has been intensively cultivated for its voluminous fruits since the Tang dynasty. In Europe, it is relatively rare, significantly differing from commonly available hawthorn species and becoming an ornament in every collectors' collection.

The crown of the tree has a broadly ovate shape with ascending branches, on which only small scattered spines appear in adulthood. The leaves are large, dark green, deeply pinnate with three to five pairs of narrow lobes, and in the autumn season, they turn into striking orange-red tones. The white five-petalled flowers have distinctly pink stamens and form clusters up to ten centimetres in diameter, attracting swarms of pollinators. The large juicy fruits ripen to a vibrant deep red colour with noticeable silvery lenticels, and their aroma resembles a combination of apple and rose.

To achieve quality growth, the method of cold stratification in peat pellets for six months with regular moisture checks can be used. The second option is sowing in the autumn directly into a clay-sandy mixture in a double-protected container to guard against rodents and placing it in a sheltered outdoor spot. Young seedlings after germination require partial shade, higher humidity, and regular fertilising irrigation to support the development of a strong root system. Container cultivation is recommended for the first two years, and only then should they be transplanted to a permanent location considering the final size of the tree.

  • 10 pcs of Crataegus pinnatifida seeds

A group of ten cultivated seedlings provides material for creating an exotic corner in the garden, or for experimenting with different types of habitats and comparing individual responses to specific conditions. In Chinese cuisine, the fruits are used to make popular juice, fruit wine, iced juices, and dried slices served as a snack for children. The large-fruited hawthorn is also used in its countries of origin for creating bonsai compositions due to its striking fruits and long summer foliage. In terms of care, the tree requires deep permeable soil and a location protected from strong westerly winds. The cultivated specimen appreciates regular shaping cuts performed in the winter season, which support branching and fruiting quality.
