This set contains 10 seeds of the species Dracaena draco subsp. draco, the iconic dragon tree also known by its Czech name dračinec rumělkový. This long-lived timber tree originates from the Canary Islands and surrounding Atlantic regions, where it creates impressive solitary specimens with its characteristic umbrella-shaped crown. The robust grey trunk grows to impressive dimensions over decades, branching out at height into dozens of smaller branches, each bearing a dense tuft of sword-like green leaves. Cultivating this plant from seed represents a long-term project, but the result is truly a unique plant that is not easily grown at home. The set of ten seeds provides a convenient reserve for several sowing attempts and the selection of the most vigorous individuals.
For successful germination, we recommend soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 to 48 hours before sowing, allowing them to swell and initiate germination more easily. Sow into a permeable substrate composed of potting soil, sand, and perlite to a depth of about one centimetre. Germination occurs best at temperatures ranging from 22 to 26 °C and stable humidity, which can be maintained in a mini greenhouse or under a film. The germination period can take several weeks to months, so patience is essential with this species. Young seedlings grow relatively slowly and form a single stem with a rosette of leaves in the early years. For successful cultivation, provide the plant with a bright location with direct, yet gradually acclimatised sunlight and careful watering. In winter, it is necessary to protect the plant from frost; therefore, in our conditions, cultivate the plant in a pot that you can move to a protected bright space during winter.
