A collar is one of the first things a dog needs. It is used for daily walks, to attach the leash and to carry the identification tag. The range of dog collars includes various types by material, closure and purpose, from simple models for small breeds to sturdy collars for large and strong dogs.
By material, you will most often come across leather and nylon collars. Leather looks elegant and is durable, while textile and nylon are light, easy to clean and available in a wide range of colours. The closure also differs — a classic buckle, a quick-release plastic buckle or metal rings for attaching the leash and tag.
A separate group is formed by semi-slip collars, which tighten slightly when pulled and suit breeds with a narrower head or training. For better visibility at dusk there are collars with reflective elements or LED lighting. They often include a place for the address tag as well.
When choosing, start from the dog's neck circumference and size — the collar should sit comfortably but must not slip over the head. Also consider the dog's weight and strength, for puppies account for growth and choose adjustable models. For pulling and strong dogs, wider and sturdier collars are more suitable, as they distribute the pressure evenly.
