Overview
Cyrtanthus Breviflorus Seeds 10 pcs Yellow Star-shaped Flower for Greenhouse and Ornamental Garden Planting

A set of ten Cyrtanthus breviflorus seeds is an offering for collectors of exotic bulbous plants and enthusiasts of South African flora. Cyrtanthus breviflorus originates from the mountain regions of South Africa and Lesotho, where it grows on grassy slopes and in moist valleys. This species is popular among growers for its striking bright yellow star-shaped flowers that emerge from long stems. The bulbous system allows the plant to survive dry periods and regularly bloom annually in the summer. Ten quality seeds provide the opportunity to try cultivating this unconventional African plant.

Cyrtanthus breviflorus forms a compact plant with a small bulb and long narrow leaves resembling those of other lily-like plants. The plant reaches a height of 30 to 50 centimetres in full bloom and a width of around 20 centimetres. The inflorescence consists of 4 to 6 star-shaped flowers with a diameter of 2 to 4 centimetres, featuring a bright yellow colour and six pointed petals. The flowers bloom gradually from mid-summer to autumn and last for 1 to 2 weeks in full beauty. The leaves remain green throughout the growing season.

For sowing the ten seeds, indoor pre-cultivation from mid-February in seed trays with well-draining substrate is recommended. The seeds should be sown shallowly to a depth of 5 millimetres and maintained at a temperature of 20 to 24 degrees Celsius in partial shade. Germination occurs in 3 to 8 weeks and the germination rate for quality fresh seeds reaches 50 to 70 percent. Young seedlings develop a small bulb the size of a pea during the first year. For successful plant development, it is essential to keep the substrate slightly moist during the growing season and drier during the dormant period.

Cyrtanthus breviflorus is rarely seen in garden assortments and cultivating it from seeds presents a challenge and reward for enthusiasts of exotic bulbous plants. The flowers attract small pollinators such as bees and butterflies, creating a striking splash of colour in the garden. In South Africa, the plant is used in traditional Zulu medicine for preparing infusions and poultices. For successful cultivation in Czech climatic conditions, we recommend container cultivation with annual wintering indoors or in an unheated greenhouse. From ten seeds cultivated, it is realistic to raise 3 to 5 healthy plants.
