Overview
Cundinamarca Mountain Papaya Seeds Carica pubescens 5 pcs Colombian Fruit Tree with Ribbed Yellow Fruits for Sowing and Cultivation

Carica pubescens, commonly known as papayuela or mountain papaya, is a rarely available species of papaya originating from the cool mountainous areas of the South American Andes. This small package contains 5 seeds of the prized variety Cundinamarca, named after the department of the same name in central Colombia. A characteristic feature of the plant is its smaller ribbed fruits that ripen to a rich yellow colour and form dense clusters around a slender trunk. The top of the tree is adorned with large palmate lobed green leaves. Compared to the common papaya, this variety tolerates significantly lower temperatures and is cultivated in its native lands at altitudes of over 2000 metres. The fruits have a denser texture and are used in the kitchen almost exclusively after cooking – they are a base for traditional South American compotes, sweet and sour sauces, and delicacies.

Contents of the Package:

  • 5 seeds of Carica pubescens 'Cundinamarca'

For successful germination, we recommend soaking the seeds overnight in lukewarm water, which softens the seed coat and allows for more even germination. Sow in a permeable substrate in a container with a lid at a temperature of around 22 °C. Since the species naturally grows in cooler mountainous areas, the seedlings will appreciate milder temperatures and higher humidity than the common papaya. Young plants grow moderately fast under good conditions and gradually develop a typical structure with large palmate leaves. When grown in a European climate, the plant thrives in a cool, bright conservatory or greenhouse, where temperatures can drop to freezing point but should not freeze for long. In summer, the plant can be placed outside in a semi-shaded location. This package of 5 seeds of Carica pubescens 'Cundinamarca' is therefore a suitable start for growers who wish to embark on the more challenging yet fascinating cultivation of this Andean fruit rarity.
