Coix lacryma-jobi Seeds 20 pcs Tropical Grass with Pearly Fruits for Making Jewellery, Necklaces and Rosaries

Coix lacryma-jobi, commonly known as Job's tears, is a tropical perennial grass renowned for its hard, pearly rounded fruits, which are used in handicrafts worldwide. This package contains 20 seeds for cultivating this intriguing herbaceous plant at home or in the garden. The species originates from Southeast Asia, where it is traditionally grown for dual purposes – as a material for jewellery making and as an edible grain. In many Asian cultures, the seeds are used as part of rosaries, mala beads, or necklaces.

In adulthood, the plant produces an upright stem growing to a height of 1 to 2 metres with long narrow leaves that resemble corn leaves. During the flowering period, inflorescences appear at the ends of the branched stems, from which the characteristic berry-like fruits gradually develop. The fruits are round, hard as stone, with a glossy surface that ranges from white to grey to black depending on the ripeness. They have a natural hole in the centre, allowing them to be easily threaded onto a string without further modification.

For successful germination, it is advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. They should be sown in well-draining substrate at a temperature of around 22 to 25 °C to a depth of 1 to 2 cm. Germination takes 2 to 3 weeks. The plant is undemanding in terms of conditions and tolerates various soil types, although a sunny location with regular watering is ideal. Job's tears are grown in the Czech Republic as an annual or biennial plant, while in its native tropics, it grows as a perennial.

Growing Job's tears presents an interesting choice for gardeners and creative growers who wish to have their own material for jewellery making or decorative items. Once the fruits are ripe (usually from late summer to autumn), the seeds are harvested, dried, and can then be threaded onto a string, wire or cord to make bracelets, necklaces, and meditation beads. In traditional Chinese medicine, the plant is valued for its young grains used in soups and medicinal preparations. For optimal growth, it is important to provide the plant with a sunny location, regular watering, and quality garden substrate. After harvesting the seeds, some of the yield can be saved for the next season for re-sowing.
