Overview
Coffea arabica Castillo Coffee Seeds 5 pcs Fertile Resilient Tree with Red Cherries for Home Coffee from a Houseplant

Coffea arabica 'Castillo' is a modern cultivated variety of Coffea arabica, developed by the Colombian research institute Cenicafé as a resilient alternative to traditional varieties. This pack contains 5 seeds for growing your own coffee plant at home – whether for ornamental purposes, as an educational project, or as the beginning of your own journey from seed to mature coffee bean. The species is native to the mountainous regions of Ethiopia and Sudan, where it grows in the understory of humid mountain forests.

The 'Castillo' variety is the result of a breeding programme focused on high resistance to coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix) and other diseases that affect traditional variants such as Typica or Bourbon. When mature, the plant forms a compact tree 2 to 3 metres tall with characteristic dark green, glossy, oval elliptic leaves with visible venation. The flowers are small, pure white, strongly fragrant, and after pollination, they gradually develop into fruits – coffee cherries, which change colour from green to yellow and finally to deep red.

For successful germination, it is best to use fresh seeds, as old seeds quickly lose their viability. It is recommended to soak the seeds in warm water for 24 to 48 hours before sowing. They should be sown shallowly in a well-draining, slightly acidic substrate at a temperature of 27 to 30 °C. Germination takes 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes longer. Young seedlings require partial shade, high humidity, and stable warmth above 18 °C. In European conditions, the coffee plant is grown exclusively as an indoor plant or in a conservatory.

Growing your own coffee plant from seeds is a long-term but fascinating project – the first coffee cherries can usually be expected in 3 to 5 years with good care. From the fruits of your home coffee plant, you can harvest beans that, after drying and roasting, can be used to prepare real home coffee. Processing your own beans provides the grower with an experience from seed to cup and an understanding of the entire coffee production process. For successful growth, stable room temperature, bright filtered light without direct sunlight, and regular misting of the leaves to maintain higher humidity are important. In winter, it is advisable to grow the plant in a cooler room with temperatures of 13 to 15 °C and to limit watering.
