We recommend sowing the seeds early in spring, ideally in seed trays indoors, to give the plant ample time to develop before transplanting outside. Sow in a well-draining substrate composed of potting soil and sand to a depth of about half a centimetre, and maintain moderate moisture. Germination occurs best at a temperature range of 18 to 22 °C and typically takes place within two to four weeks. Young seedlings thrive in a sunny location with regular watering and sufficient space for the long shoots to twine. To ensure successful cultivation, provide the plant with strong support—wire trellises, strings, or larger grids for it to climb. In conditions with mild winters, the plant can survive outdoors with root protection; in colder areas, it is usually grown as an annual.
