Canna seeds have a hard black shell resembling small pellets, so pre-sowing treatment is necessary – the seeds are either filed with a fine file or cut, or soaked in lukewarm water for 24 hours. After this treatment, germination occurs more quickly and evenly. Sow in well-draining substrate in a tray with a cover or in a mini-greenhouse at a temperature around 25 °C. Young seedlings grow quickly and after a few months are ready to be transplanted to a permanent outdoor location after the last spring frosts. In winter, dig up the rhizomes and store them in a cooler dry place with a temperature around 5–10 °C, where they will safely survive until the next spring.
