Overview
Bulk Pack of Hawthorn Seeds Crataegus pinnatifida 100 pcs Fruit Tree with Red Berries for Landscape and Agroforestry Projects

The bulk pack of one hundred seeds of Chinese hawthorn Crataegus pinnatifida is intended for landscape architects, agroforestry projects, and bulk buyers focused on the restoration of agricultural landscapes through the introduction of unconventional and climate-resilient fruit species. Crataegus pinnatifida is studied within the research on agricultural adaptation to climate change as a promising component of so-called intercropping series and shaded corridors, as it combines fruit-bearing capacity with high drought tolerance. The large number of seeds allows for division into several sowing batches and phased planting over two to three seasons.

The wood of the Chinese hawthorn is extremely hard, densely arranged, and has traditionally been used in Asia for making mallets, shafts, mill gears, and artistic carvings. The bark of mature trees is light grey and slightly peels in smaller plates with darker cracks on older trunks. In the agroforestry system, Crataegus pinnatifida plays the role of a medium-height tree layer, among which landowners can cultivate shrubs such as currants or gooseberries and perennial herbs. The tree tolerates short periods of flooding due to its relatively shallow but widespread root system.

For sowing one hundred seeds, the method of establishing an outdoor planting mound has proven effective, which is a shallow bed approximately fifty centimetres wide with a layer of coarsely sieved substrate containing compost, sand, and native soil in a ratio of 1:1:2. After sowing the seeds to a depth of approximately one centimetre, the mound is covered with a thin layer of sawdust mulch and a strong mesh protection against birds and rodents. Stratification occurs completely naturally over the winter period, and the first germination usually takes place in spring after one or two complete winters. From the bulk sowing, 30 to 60 strong seedlings can be obtained, which reach a height of 25 to 40 centimetres by the end of the second season.

Contents of the package:

  • 100 pcs of Crataegus pinnatifida seeds

One hundred cultivated seedlings can be divided into several smaller plantations or establish a strip of trees approximately one hundred metres long, which will eventually become a functional part of the landscape with numerous ecosystem benefits. The fruits can be processed industrially after harvest – pharmaceutical laboratories prepare concentrated extracts from the dried fruits for the production of dietary supplements or herbal syrups. The tree has high value for capturing CO2 and stabilising soil, making it suitable for plantings aimed at restoring degraded areas. Bulk planting also helps create habitats for wildlife, birds, and a diverse range of pollinating insects.
