Soft plastics form the backbone of modern spin fishing. Soft lures are made from a flexible material that mimics the body of a small fish and moves naturally on the retrieve. The most widely used are twisters and shads, which differ in tail shape and in how strongly they vibrate.
The rig affects both the movement and the depth at which the lure works. The classic solution is a jig head, whose weight is chosen according to depth and current. Discreet rigs with an offset hook are also used and suit weedy areas.
Size and colour are matched to the target species and the conditions. Smaller pieces work for perch, longer models rather for pike and zander. In coloured water bold shades help, while in clear water subtle imitations of natural prey perform better.
The advantage of this lure type lies in the variety of retrieves. A steady retrieve, hops along the bottom and slow dragging all change how the soft bait behaves in the water, making it easy to respond to how active the fish are on a given day.
