RAM modules

Memory for desktops and laptops — DDR4 and DDR5 in DIMM and SO-DIMM form, single modules and kits. Choose by the type your motherboard supports and by capacity, frequency and latency. The generations are not interchangeable and will not fit a slot of another type.

RAM modules

Memory modules the computer works with while running — DDR4 and DDR5, and DDR3 on older builds, in the longer DIMM form for desktops and the shorter SO-DIMM form for laptops and mini PCs. They are sold singly and in kits of two or four.

Motherboard support decides it — the memory type, maximum capacity, number of slots and supported frequencies. Choose RAM modules by what the board and processor can handle; the generations are not compatible with one another and differ in the position of the notch in the connector, so they will not fit the wrong slot.

Performance comes down to capacity, frequency and latency — capacity in GB per module, frequency in MHz or MT/s and latency given as CL. A higher frequency alone is not enough; latency usually rises with it, so the two values are judged together.

For dual channel, fit the modules in pairs and in the slots the board designates for it — these are usually colour-coded and described in the manual. A kit of two identical modules is the safest bet; mixing different capacities, frequencies or makers can lower the speed you end up with.

A frequency above the base one is enabled on DDR4 with the XMP profile and on DDR5 with XMP or EXPO in the BIOS. Before fitting, switch the computer off and unplug it from the mains, hold the module by its edges and discharge static electricity. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and the motherboard's list of supported memory.
