Hub motor conversion kits

Hub motor kits come with a complete wheel with the motor laced in, so you simply swap the original wheel and connect the other parts. You’ll find rear kits rated at 250 or 500 W and front kits at 250 W, without a battery. Kits rated above 250 W or fitted with a throttle are not road-legal under EU rules.

Hub motor conversion kits

The motor is laced into a 26, 27.5, 28 or 29-inch rim. Kits with a rear hub motor are rated at 250 W at 36 V or 500 W at 48 V, and the manufacturer quotes 65 Nm for the 500 W versions. Front kits (250 W, 36 V) fit forks with 97 to 103 mm dropout spacing.

For rear kits, check the frame’s rear dropout spacing: 133 to 148 mm depending on the model, most often 135 to 142 mm. Most rear kits are for cassettes, some for screw-on freewheels. The hub on most kits is ready for a disc brake.

All kits include a controller, cadence sensor, throttle and brake sensors or brake levers that cut the motor when braking. Most also have an LED, LCD or Bluetooth display, and many have walk assist. The 36 or 48 V battery is sold separately. In the EU, only an e-bike up to 250 W with pedal-only assistance up to 25 km/h counts as a bicycle; stronger kits and kits with a throttle may fall into another vehicle category.
