The inserts are made from PP filter cotton, whose fine fibres capture rust, sand, sludge, and other mechanical impurities from tap water before it passes through the nozzles. How quickly the insert becomes clogged depends primarily on the quality of the water in your tap and how many times the shower is used daily. The filter cotton gradually changes colour from white to yellow to brown during operation, so you can easily tell when it is time for a replacement.
