Overview
R&D QT160 Wall Detector 147 x 68.5 x 28 mm with Backlit LCD Display and Light Signalisation for Finding Metals, Beams and Wires

The R&D QT160 wall detector shows you what lies beneath plaster, drywall or wooden cladding before you drill. It detects wooden beams and profiles, metal pipes and fittings, as well as unshielded live wires, allowing you to easily choose a safe spot for a plug or screw. It can detect metal objects up to a depth of 60 mm and live AC wires up to 51 mm deep. The measurement results are displayed on a backlit LCD display, which remains easy to read even in basements, attics or poorly lit rooms. It is ideal for flat renovations, shelf installations, hanging pictures, and custom furniture construction.

For finding beams, the detector offers two modes. The precise mode works up to a depth of 20 mm, while the deep mode can reach up to 38 mm, and you can switch between them with a long press of the button. The detector shows both the centre and edge of the beam, displaying the signal strength as a percentage during scanning, and the coloured indicators along with an audible signal alert you to the detected object. The device alerts you to live wires in all modes. In metal mode, the display also shows the approximate depth, and the units can be switched between centimetres and inches.

Before measuring, hold the detector against the wall and wait for it to complete its automatic calibration. Then slowly slide it sideways until the display indicates the centre of the object, and mark the spot with a pencil. The back is covered with felt, so the device does not scratch painted walls or tiles, and the non-slip side with soft rubber buttons ensures a firm grip. If the beeping bothers you, the sound can be muted by a long press of the button. After use, wipe the detector with a dry cloth and store it in the provided pouch.

The R&D QT160 is a practical helper for the home workshop, appreciated by DIY enthusiasts and tradespeople during electrical installations, drilling, and fittings. Three detection modes, a backlit display, and light signalisation help prevent drilling into cables or metal pipes. It operates on a 9 V battery for approximately six hours and automatically shuts off after 15 minutes of inactivity. Its compact body measuring 147 x 68.5 x 28 mm fits comfortably in a tool bag. Thanks to the clear symbols on the display, even beginners can operate it with ease.
