Overview
Brumle Drumbla 8.5 cm Metal Mouth Harp Silver with Black Tongue Pocket Folk Musical Instrument for Beginners and Throat Singing

This metal brumle is one of the oldest and simplest musical instruments you can always carry with you. With a length of just 8.5 cm, it fits into a shirt pocket, a glasses case, or a small pocket in a backpack. The frame has a silver hue and an elegantly shaped outline, with a thin black tongue in the centre ending in a bent tip. The instrument is suitable for beginners who want to explore the sound of folk music, as well as for players who use the brumle for accompaniment or improvisation. The sound is produced by vibrating the tongue with a finger, and the oral cavity serves as a natural resonator.

The principle of playing is simple and does not require knowledge of notes or music theory. The brumle is easily placed with the frame against slightly parted teeth so that the tongue can move freely, and a finger is plucked on its bent end. You change the pitch and colour of the tone by the shape of your mouth, the position of your tongue, and your breath, allowing you to create a whole range of sounds from a single instrument. The construction is based on Mongolian and Russian traditions, and the brumle is still associated with throat singing, ethnic music, and meditation. The tongue is attached to the frame with two rivets at the top of the instrument.

The small brumle is a great companion for moments when you want to play but do not want to carry a bulky instrument. You can pull it out during a break on a trip, while waiting for a train, or in the evening by the fire, and within seconds it is ready to play. Because the sound is mainly created in the mouth, each player gradually finds their own style, rhythm, and favourite tongue positions.

  • Type of instrument – brumle (drumbla, mouth harp)
  • Length – 8.5 cm
  • Material – metal
  • Finish – silver shaped frame with black tongue
  • Method of play – plucking the tongue with a finger, the oral cavity serves as a resonator

When playing for the first time, gently pluck the tongue and gradually find the position that best fits the shape of your mouth. Do not press the instrument hard against your teeth; a light contact of the frame is sufficient for the tongue to vibrate without obstruction. After playing, wipe the brumle with a dry cloth and store it in a way that does not bend the tongue, for example in a fabric pouch or a small box. Due to its compact size, you can easily take it on a trip, to a cottage, or to a musical gathering with friends.

The pocket brumle is a practical instrument for anyone who wants to try playing a folk instrument without complicated learning. Its small size and simple handling make it a suitable gift for musicians, travellers, and curious beginners. It is great for relaxation, joint music-making, and exploring the harmonic tones that arise from changing the shape of the mouth. Thanks to its metal frame, you will have it on hand at home and on the go, and you can return to playing whenever you like.
