Overview
Storm Glass Cube 8.5 cm Barometer Made of Hand-Blown Glass on Beech Base Table Decoration

The storm glass in the shape of a cube is a glass decoration in which fine crystals form and dissolve according to temperature changes. The cube with an edge of 8.5 cm is filled with a solution that can be nearly clear at times and at other times filled with white formations resembling snow or feathers. The vessel is propped up on one corner by a beech wood base, giving it a light and airy appearance. The larger version is easily visible from across the room and attracts attention on a chest of drawers, bookshelf, or desk. Observing the changes in the crystals delights both children and adults, turning an ordinary table into a place where something is always happening.

The vessel is hand-blown from lead-free borosilicate glass, which is clear and allows light to pass through well. Inside is a solution of distilled water, ethanol, camphor, and other substances, whose crystals react to temperature changes approximately in the range of 2 to 40 °C. As the temperature rises, the crystals gradually disperse and the liquid clears. Conversely, as it cools, the crystals increase in number and larger feather-like formations appear in the liquid. By observing the shape of the crystals, you can track how the environment around the cube changes throughout the day and across the seasons.

The geometric shape of the cube harmonises well with modern, minimalist, and Scandinavian interiors. The light wood of the base and the clear glass complement wood, concrete, white shelves, and houseplants. You can place the cube in the living room, study, children's room, or office, and thanks to its smooth surface, it is easy to keep clean.

  • Type – storm glass in the shape of a cube
  • Dimensions of the cube – 8.5 x 8.5 cm
  • Base – 8 x 8 x 2 cm
  • Material of the vessel – hand-blown lead-free borosilicate glass
  • Material of the base – beech wood
  • Filling – solution of distilled water, ethanol, camphor, and other substances
  • Reaction range – approximately 2 to 40 °C
  • Placement – interior
  • Contents of the package – glass cube with filling and wooden base

Upon unpacking, the liquid may be cloudy and clusters of crystals may appear at the bottom. This is a normal condition, and the solution usually stabilises within one to two weeks in a new environment. Place the cube in an interior location where the temperature naturally changes throughout the day. In an air-conditioned room, the changes in the crystals will be less pronounced. Do not expose it to direct sunlight for long periods, as camphor may turn brown and the curved glass concentrates light like a magnifying glass. Hand-blown glass may occasionally contain small bubbles or spots, which are part of the manufacturing process. The surface can be wiped with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

The storm glass cube combines a simple geometric shape with a variable play of crystals that change throughout the year. The cube with an edge of 8.5 cm stands on a base of 8 x 8 cm, taking up little space. Clear hand-blown glass highlights each crystal inside. It serves as a table decoration, for a bookshelf, or on a windowsill, and makes an interesting gift for nature and science lovers. Each glance at it can reveal a slightly different image.
