Protective covers for garden furniture

Practical protection for outdoor furniture against rain, sun, dust and frost. Protective covers for garden furniture include tarpaulins for whole sets and covers for individual pieces — chairs, tables, sun loungers or corner sets — in various sizes. They differ in material and waterproofing as well as in fastening, thanks to which they stay in place even in wind and the furniture stays dry and clean all season.

Protective covers for garden furniture

Outdoor furniture copes with the weather better when a proper cover protects it overnight, in the rain or over winter. Protective covers for garden furniture cover the whole set and individual pieces and stop water from getting into the material, dust from settling, and textiles and wood from fading in the sun. They are chosen mainly by the size and shape of the furniture, the material and the way the cover is fastened.

Depending on the piece being protected, the types of cover differ. Large tarpaulins cover whole dining or lounge sets, while separate covers are shaped for chairs and armchairs, tables, sun loungers or swing seats and corner sets. It is best to choose the size with a small margin, so that the cover covers the whole piece of furniture and at the same time reaches down to the ground.

The material and waterproofing are decisive. The most common is polyester (often in an Oxford 420D or 600D finish) with a water-repellent treatment or PVC layer, complemented by UV stabilisation against fading. Thicker material and taped or welded seams hold water back better, while a breathable finish and ventilation openings reduce condensation and mould forming under the cover.

The details of fastening and handling are practical. Drawcords in the bottom hem, buckles, straps or loops for ground pegs keep the cover in place even in wind, and handles and a zip make it easy to put on and take off. For large sets, a cover with reinforcement or a support pole is useful, so that water runs off and does not collect on top. After the season, the covers fold up and store easily.
