Mattresses

The layer on which a person spends a substantial part of the day affects the quality of rest and how one feels in the morning after waking. Mattresses are made in many constructions and firmness levels to suit different body types, weights and preferred sleeping positions, and they belong to the basic equipment of every bed and sofa bed.

Several basic types are distinguished according to the inner construction. Foam and sandwich models in PUR or cold foam offer mouldability and quiet operation, memory foam conforms to the body's shape and spreads pressure evenly, latex is springy and airs well, while spring mattresses with a pocket or classic Bonell system provide breathability and firmer suspension.

Firmness and size further determine the choice. Firmness grades, usually from H1 to H5, range from softer to very firm, and the suitable level relates to weight and sleeping position. Standard widths of 80, 90, 140, 160 or 180 cm at a length of 200 cm cover children's, single and double versions, and atypical or extended sizes are usually available too.

Hygiene and durability are looked after by the top cover and proper care. A removable, washable cover, often with an anti-allergy or breathable finish, can be cleaned regularly and the core aired, which keeps the mattress fresh. When choosing, it is worth considering the height and load capacity, the support in the individual zones and whether it is meant for daily sleep or only for occasional overnight stays.
