Overview
M3 x 0.5 mm Metric Thread Mill One Tooth Shank 4 mm Solid Carbide Tungsten Carbide Silver CNC Milling Machines and Machining Centres

The M3 x 0.5 mm metric thread mill has one tooth with a thread profile and is used on CNC milling machines and machining centres. It is made entirely of tungsten carbide, a hard material commonly used for precision cutting tools. Unlike a tap, the mill does not cut the thread all at once but creates it by moving along a helix according to the machine's programme. The cutting head is at the end of the tool, followed by a narrower neck and a cylindrical shank with a diameter of 4 mm. The surface of the tool is silver.

  • Standard M3 Thread — the mill is designed for a metric thread with a nominal diameter of 3 mm and a pitch of 0.5 mm, which is the basic coarse pitch for M3. The M3 thread is commonly used in small applications, such as in instruments, electronics, casings, mechanisms, or parts for 3D printers.
  • Single Cutting Tooth — the cutting head carries one row of thread profile. The thread is formed gradually with each rotation of the tool, and its length is set in the programme.
  • Helical Programme — the mill revolves around the thread axis and during one revolution moves vertically by 0.5 mm. For this movement, the machine must support helical interpolation.
  • Tungsten Carbide — the shank, neck, and cutting head form a single piece of carbide. The material is harder than tool steel and retains the shape of the sharp tooth well.
  • Cutting Edges and Chip Removal — the cutting head features longitudinal grooves visible in the image. These create cutting edges and provide space for chips to exit.
  • Clamping Shank — the cylindrical shank with a diameter of 4 mm is inserted into a collet or holder of the same diameter. The narrower neck between the shank and head allows it to enter a hole.
  • Both Thread Directions — whether a right or left thread is produced depends on the direction of the helix in the programme. Therefore, one mill is sufficient for both directions.
  • Pre-drilling Diameter — the internal thread is milled into a pre-drilled hole. Choose its diameter according to the tables for M3 thread and clean the hole of chips and burrs before milling.
  • Handling the Mill — the cutting head is small and may break under overload. Choose appropriate feeds and speeds, and secure the tool firmly and accurately. When not in use, store it in a case to protect the cutting edge.
  • Package Contents — 1x M3 x 0.5 mm metric thread mill with one tooth and a 4 mm shank.

The single-tooth mill for M3 x 0.5 mm thread is used for milling small metric threads on CNC milling machines and machining centres. Tungsten carbide provides the hardness needed for precise work. The thread is formed gradually along the helix, and its length and direction can be set in the programme. The tool is inserted into the holder with a cylindrical 4 mm shank. It is suitable for workshops and production where M3 threads are milled.
