Halloween decorations

Halloween decorations include lit pumpkins and lanterns, inflatable figures and fabric cobwebs and garlands. Only put out in rain and sun what is explicitly rated for outdoor use, because paper and cheap PVC last a few days. Put an LED light in pumpkins and lanterns rather than a tea light, because cobwebs and paper burn faster than you can react. Anchor an inflatable figure with pegs and guy lines, and in stronger wind switch it off and fold it away.

Halloween decorations

Decor for Halloween falls roughly into three groups that are used and stored differently. The lit ones are pumpkins, lanterns and string lights on batteries or mains, inflatable figures hold their shape thanks to a blower that runs the whole time, and the fabric side is cobwebs, curtains and garlands. On top of that come the small bits like plastic spiders, teeth and eyes, small enough for a toddler or a dog to swallow. Decorations within reach of children and animals are therefore chosen in one piece, with no removable small parts.

Material and outdoor rating decide whether a decoration lasts a season or one rain shower. Outdoor use has to be stated in the description, because paper and card soak through within an hour and cheap PVC goes brittle in the sun. A fabric cobweb greys and stretches outdoors but survives, whereas latex masks and figures harden and crack in frost. On string lights look for a protection rating of at least IP44, otherwise keep them under a roof.

Light instead of flame is the decisive thing with this decor, because it gets combined with the most flammable materials in the house. A tea light in a pumpkin is romantic until the pumpkin starts charring from the inside, and in a paper lantern it is a matter of minutes. An LED candle behaves the same way and sets fire to no cobweb, curtain or costume that someone brushes it with. Take the batteries out of the decorations after the season, because alkaline cells leak and eat the contacts.

Anchoring inflatable figures is underestimated until the figure ends up on the road. The blower runs the whole time, so without power the decoration collapses and only inflates again once switched back on. In a lawn the supplied pegs go into every eyelet and guy lines go over the body as well, on paving sandbags are used instead of pegs. In stronger wind switch the figure off and fold it away, because inflated it works like a sail.

Storage until next season decides whether a decoration lasts three years or one. Everything has to be dry before it is packed, because damp fabric and an inflatable figure will go mouldy in the box by spring. Leave latex and soft PVC loosely folded, not squashed under something heavy, or they break along the creases for good.
